上海是被数以百计的摄影大师拍摄过的城市，上海的女人自然也被多少著名摄影师刻画过。此次法国摄影师吉拉尔的新颖之处，在于他通过一直在进行的暂定名为《上海的女人》这一正在进行中的项目，将城市景观与肖像联系起来。这些形成一道肖像三联屏的影像，营造出年轻女人与都市环境之间连当事人也尚未觉察的微妙关系。“我们就是被生活周围环境塑造成的个我”，这似乎就是这位知识型风光摄影师对于一个飞速变化的大都市中女性身份所作的存在主义式观察。吉拉尔毕业于巴黎政治学院，1976年开始从事摄影创作。1984年获得涅普斯奖，1989年获美第奇学院奖，1997年获得日法交流会馆奖。他出版大量书籍，2010年在巴黎欧洲摄影之家以及蒙帕纳斯美术馆举办了展览。他的系列作品《真实国家之旅》是根据维克多·谢阁兰的游记在中国拍摄的，自2007年在上海美术馆展出以来，曾在多处展出。他的作品一直被重要机构和美术馆收藏。

Shanghai is a city photographed by hundreds of great photographers, and Shanghai’s women naturally have been portrayed by hundreds of other great photographers. What is original is the striking association of city landscape with portraiture, as Thierry Girard has been researching with his new, on-going project temporarily titled Women in Shanghai. The images form a sort of iconographic triptych and create a subtle relationship between the young woman and the urban environment that even the subject has not suspected. We-are-what-our-living-neighborhood-make-us-be seems to be the existentialist observation that this intellectual landscape photographer has made about women’s identity in a fast changing megacity.
Thierry Girard graduated from the Paris Political Sciences Institute. He began working with photography in 1976. He won the Prix Niepce in 1984, the Villa Medicis Grant in 1989, and the Villa Kujoyama Grant in 1997. He has published numerous books and he held exhibitions at Maison Europeenne de la Photo and Musee Montparnasse in 2010. His series Journey to the Country of Real, a series of China photographs based on Victor Segalen’s itinerary, has been exhibited in many places since his 2007 exhibition at Shanghai Art Museum. His works have been collected by major institutions and museums.
