The ultimate release from the inner self.
In the process of transforming the structured body into an empty body in order to have a dialogue with the recent urbanization
-Nan Hao
Nan Hao presents a photographic installation that juxtaposes the body with the urban landscape. By putting his body to the test and pushing the limits between space and the human body, he raises questions concerning the urgency of naturalism, emptiness, and the corporeal body. He considers the basic human experiences that we have lost within contemporary culture and the dominance of materialism and technology. Collectively his work examines how our behavior has been constructed by dominating functional, cultural, and social instruments which have directed us to do things “normally” in order to fit in the social norm. He considers the challenges in understanding our psychological and physical abilities in the face of this overwhelmingly utilitarian society.
Nan Hao graduated from Frank Mohr Institute in the Netherlands in 2007, receiving an MFA from the painting program. Since 2008, he has taught art at Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, Shantou University. During his time in Europe and New York, he exhibited widely in galleries and art spaces. His works are found in the collections of the Centre for Visual Art Dortdrecht, Sign Foundation, The Netherlands, and several private collections.
The Where Where Space was formed to provide an alternative platform for the research, dissemination and critical study of contemporary art. Our intention is to provide support for local artistic practices that explore the social, political, and cultural dynamics currently at play in China. As well we are dedicated to fostering a greater level of international exchange between China and the international art community through the development of a residency program, visual art presentations, symposiums, talks, and touring exhibitions, while supporting curatorial research, publishing, and performance projects by both Chinese and international artistic and critics.
